Lessons from the Super, Blue, Blood Moon

ree

It was 4am and crazy cold, but I kept staring frozen in place not by the bitter air, but by the perfect circle of light suspended above my head. Captivated by the moon.

And then, a question…

Have you ever tried to stare into the center of the sun?

Of course not. It’s too bright, too radiant, too brilliant for my eyes to behold. Not only can I not look at it, I must also shield my eyes from it.

But the moon. I can stare directly at the moon.

And then, a scripture…

“As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen.” Exodus 33:22-23

Why couldn’t Moses look right into the face of God?

Could it be the same reason I can’t look directly at the sun?

Too bright, too radiant, too brilliant!

But, God!  Show us your glory!

And He did. He wrapped up that glorious light in the form of a man, an earthly vessel, so that we could look directly into His face.

“Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” John 5:19

The moon makes no light of its own; only reflects that of the sun.

Jesus stepped into this dark world to reflect the light of the Father, to drop breadcrumbs of holy light so that we can follow the path, even when it’s pitch black.

The intense rays of the sun light up the entire sky, but the moon needs the darkness to shine the brightest. And what is the moon called when it moves into the shadow of the earth?

A Blood Moon.

So, back to the original question. Can you stare into the center of the sun?

No, but you can see its magnificent light reflected in the moon, shining bright in the night sky, and in a fallen world.

After all this, I turned in my Bible to the book of Revelation, since it appeared I’d just received one. And what did my eyes see…

“The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” Revelation 21:23

The sun, the moon…the light, the lamp.

Oh, the Glory!  Behold it.
